I usually arrive before the majority of the people in the build which means I get to pick my spot. I like to get under the building and I like to go next to the Bronze Evoque. He tends to be there all day so i dont really have to worry about people swiping me. The Challenger is my co-workers. On thing I dont really like about the Allroad is its gearing. It wants to shift into second around 10 mph which barely gets me across an intersection. Would it be bad if i just start in second all the time?

My concern would be clutch wear, but it sounds like that might be a non-issue as first gear is geared really low, and second gear is also low geared. What speed are you at for the 2-3 shift?

Another option would be to try it out in 2nd a few times and see if there’s any serious bog or shuddering.

If it’s a torque converter auto box there isn’t much downside to starting in second - if it will, it might overrule you - but then again it might be easier to use the gear-hold button to stick in first a little longer.

Then I don’t understand what the problem is.

would it be bad for the car to do that

To do what? Hold onto first gear longer? Shouldn’t be, as long as you’re not bouncing it off the rev limiter. Otherwise, first is really only to get the car rolling anyway, so you should be fine shifting into second as soon as you get going.

Really, though, you ought to be able to shift from first to second fast enough for it not to matter. If you’re not feeling confident, it can seem much slower than it really is, but you’re probably actually doing just fine.

My diesel manual golf gets into 3rd around 15 mph. I can drive in 2nd at 7-8mph with my feet completely off any pedals. Talk about a low 1st gear :(

have no problem shifting, it just seems like i’m 10' off the line and i’m going into second. it almost seems like i shouldn;t even bother with 1st and start off in second.

u can do 3rd @15 mph? what rpm? i’m going into second around 3000rpm. ican do 6th around 2000 rpm which also seems pretty low to me. i would have thought 6th would be closer to 60 mph

3rd @ 15mph is basically idle. Around 1,000 rpm. Same with 2nd gear @ 8mph. I can usually switch to the next gear around 1600 rpm or so and the next gear will start around 1200-1300 rpm. Almost ZERO power down there because the turbo won’t spool until around 1600-1800 rpm but it will keep going!

for normal driving where do you usually shift and cruise? I usually shift around 3000 and cruise at 2000

IIRC as long as you aren’t trying to climb a hill, starting in second will have little to no long term affects.

Well, that’s pretty much how 1st tends to work. It’s only for pulling away from a dead stop. If you’re able to, ideally you’d keep rolling in second, clutch in, ready to give way if necessary, and when you see everything’s clear, let out the clutch and pull away in second. You can do that from as slow as about 2-3mph in most cars, on the flat. Obviously on hills, or with a heavily loaded car, that can be a little different.

i guess it just seemed like the WRX could go faster in 1st without revving way up

To answer your question, no there’s no problem with starting in 1st. Source: Every manual-equipped truck driver ever.

As long as the engine has the torque to handle the 2nd gear start, go for it.

i was afraid it would put extra wear on the clutch, especially since i have 0 knowledge of how old the thing actually is

It can wear the clutch more because of the extra friction time starting off in the taller gear. That being said, the extra wear is likely negligible and mostly negated by the reduction of 1-2 shifts.

Starting in second with these cars is fine. I hate first also, there’s no power unless you hit ze boost super hard.

Scared the shit out of passengers last week with a 1-3 pull. Was able to get up to like 25 in first.

You’d probably be fine starting in second. I’m thinking first gear is meant more for uphill starts, or starting off the line when you’re towing.
